Sorrow that is after the mind of God...

Part of what I based my faith in the OALC was based on what I had been taught about the history of the laestadian movement.

Sorrow that is after the mind of God...

Did you know that there are 165 references to “joy” in the bible (KJV) and 68 references to “sorrow”?

Did you know the bible uses the word “repent” 45 times, and “ believe” 149 times?

Obey 70 times and trust 133 ?

I remember when I first read Galations 5:22 I was surprised to see that sorrow was not listed as a fruit of the Holy Spirit. I had always believed that it was. I thought that if I was not feeling bad about my sinfulness I could not be saved. So if nothing in particular was bothering my conscience I would focus on some sin so I could feel bad and be saved

Sounds like you based your spiritual health on feelings or works(whether bad or good) which is very dangerous. I've been there before. But thankfully "We walk by faith not by sight." The testimony of scripture is that a believer is forgiven, saved, predestinated, justified, sanctified, preserved in Jesus Christ(Jude 1) and will be glorified, and "that wicked one touches him not." That wicked one touches us not in Jesus' name!

There are two types of sorrow.

1. Godly sorrow comes as the result of the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Godly sorrow leads you back to God. (Think Simon Peter)

2. Worldly sorrow comes as the result of the accusations of the devil. Worldly sorrow leads you away from God. (Think Judas Iscariot)

OALC sorrow

Postby 4eyes on Mon Apr 07, 2008 6:47 am

As a former OALCer, I remember asking a preacher what was wrong with taking my family to Disney world. He answered that " It takes away from the sorrow that is after the mind of God".
I was also told that the rides ( roller coasters, etc.) were a " Thrill to the flesh" and should be avoided.
Also, there was music played there and thousands of "Worldlies" that should also be avoided
.
Anything that brought joy, fun or happiness was discouraged. I am so glad to be away from those external controls that are works that give the appearance of being pious but in reality are just legalism!

avoiding joy

Postby Soapbox on Mon Apr 14, 2008 7:14 pm

You took your family to DISNEY WORLD?? No wonder they used to talk about you! You must be corrupted right down to the bone by now!

Your comment about avoiding the thousands of worldlies made me think of a conversation I had with a friend recently. We did not remember that avoiding worldlies was such a big deal when we were kids as it is now. Does anyone think that has gotten worse over time, or were we just oblivious?
