Alcohol

The opiate of the masses...

Alcohol

I come from Irish Catholic roots. Alcohol is common place for me - I never perceived it as a sin, although I admit I don't do anything particularily good when I drink too much of it. This is something that is common in society & I imagine something we all wrestle with. Is it a sin? Does it depend on how you use it?

To me alcohol is not a sin, it depends on how its used. If your using it to get drunk, then I think it becomes a sin because we do things that we normally wouldn't do when we are drunk. But having a couple drinks in my eyes there is nothing wrong with that. Jesus made water into wine at a wedding in the bible, so I guess it isn't all that bad. If people can't drink without getting out of hand, then by all means stay away from it. I guess for myself I have control over it and I know my limits and I stop after a couple. The bible doesn't say don't drink alcohol, its says don't get drunk. Theres a difference. But I understand why people don't do it and there is nothing wrong with it. The temptation of having more isn't there then. But to slap it as a law on a person is just plain wrong.

I agree with NewLife on this issue. The Bible nowhere makes a blanket prohibition against drinking alcoholic beverages. And Jesus turned water to wine. The Apostle Paul told Timothy to use a little wine. However, I believe the Bible does give stern warnings about what it can do if abused or not taken in modesty. I enjoy a half glass of wine periodically. It's not much, but it tastes good and supposedly has some healthy ingredients. I suppose the same can be said of grape juice as well. Just be careful and modest. Too much of anything can be harmful...even too much water or vitamin C or other vitamins and minerals can be dangerous!
